Government Official Confirms MoD Examining Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, as Staff Instructed to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and staff have been told to avoid discussing secret matters in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for MoD Staff

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister said that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

The announcement follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

This broader security environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of official operations, from transport usage to communication practices.
